Go to a Jazz Club

We went to Matt and Phred's in Manchester last night, for Bec's birthday. As well as live music, they do excellent food and drinks - Dave and I shared some HUGE tiger prawns cooked in lemon and garlic, patatas brava (roast potatos with salsa) and a duck, pak choi, shitake and hoi sin pizza(sans mozarella of course!).

I had a really nice glass of wine to start and after the meal treated myself to an Espresso Martini - vanilla Absolut, butterschotch Teichenne, Kahlua, Amaretto and an espresso shot shaken with ice, and topped with three coffee beans... Mmmm.

Rod Mason Elements were playing - a kind of free experimental jazz quartet (bass, drums, keyboard and Rod the 'main man' playing sax / flute / additional percussion). They played crazy sounding funky tunes with some classic styles such as bossa nova and salsa thrown in.

By the end of the night we were all up and dancing - there was even a conga train around the club! It was a really cool atmosphere, fun but chilled at the same time, it's a shame there's not somewhere similar in Sheffield, hopefully the One Eleven club will open up again soon.

We finally got back to Sheffield and crawled into bed at 4.30am, after an interesting mini-bus ride home (a driver who didn't wear his seatbelt and argued with his wife on his mobile as we drove over the snake pass!), but all in all, a wicked night out!
