Eat Sushi at a Japanese Restaurant

On 27th August it was Dave's birthday and we celebrated by going to Wasabisabi (a Japanese restaurant in Sheffield) with Dave's friends from work (past and present) and university: Tim & Jo from uni, Das Party Haus boys and Siobhan, Martin & Dave S. from the B&Q days and Hazel from the galleries.

Dave and I shared a sushi trial platter to start - one piece each of salmon, tuna & prawn nigiri (a finger of rice topped with a slice of raw fish) and six Calfornia-maki (vinegared rice filled with crabstick, egg, avocado and cucumber, rolled in sesame seeds or tobbikko (flying fish roe))

For mains we both had bento boxes. Each came with miso soup, steamed rice, salad and pickled cabbage, leaving two spaces for you to choose your own dishes. I had duck in plum sauce and grilled eel in teryaki sauce. The eel was interesting - very rich and fatty with a faint fish taste... I guess eel is kind of like the pig of the sea! It had too many fine bones for my liking, but was worth trying.

We also shared a flask of hot sake with our friend Hazel, which made us all giggly and pink in the cheeks, before moving on to a bottle of house red (a not bad Merlot) - which made the confusion over the bill that little bit harder!

After eating we bouje bouje-d to the Devonshire Cat, a brilliant CAMRA pub where they do many a exciting beer. I had a Fruli (strawberry beer) and a banana beer - mmmm! Here we met up with the Baxter kids - Ant was v. drunk as it was his birthday too.

At closing it was all back to ours for chocolate cake (baked by Hazel - thanks lady!) and a few episodes of Spaced. A really nice day then, and hopefully a fab birthday for the boy too!
